I would assume that EU regulations apply since LH is an European Airline. I would expect you a eligible for a 600EUR compensation. Maybe you can google for eu air passenger rights. But airlines are known for not giving out these kind of compensation easily.
Because of delays involved, I too think he would be eligible for compensation under EU 261 regulations.
I would strongly suggest that an e-mail be sent to Lufthansa through their website explaining the delays, etc.
