You can book anywhere. Just don't select a seat at booking, and it will assign you a "choice" seat.
When I flew USAir this past fall, the Gate agent wouldn't give me a "choice seat", telling me that's not a benefit that I was entitled to. So all I got as a *G was to board early. It was better than nothing...
