I will give you a couple examples and you can draw your own conclusions.
I wrote customer relations that my seat didn't recline in first on a a red eye and there were no other open seats. I had used stickers to upgrade and was refunded my stickers accompanied by an apology.
I wrote customer relations that my paid international business class seat had an electrical problem which caused the reading light and video to turn on and off every few minutes because some prior genius passenger had ripped out the seat control remote. I mentioned it was humorous until it was time to try to sleep. I was refunded about 25% of the fare for that flight in the form of a voucher.
No specific compensation was requested in either case, but I thought the compensation was fair in both. In both cases my compensation was directly related to what I had invested.
