Terminal 3 is the worst single airport terminal in America, and probably in the Western world. Even Delta acknowledges this: they're tearing it down and replacing it with a giant glass structure connected to the nearby Terminal 4. It's unsalvageable.
Even though I'm not a VFF, hfly is right about connecting through T5 at LHR is really insane. I find myself running and barely making it with 90 min layovers. I remember once I forgot my duty free items in one of the toilets past the security lines and after spending 15 min to get to my gate I had to spend another 30 to go back and forth. I really hope Delta's T4 doesn't end up like that!
However it really is an embarrassment to have tourists first view of the US to be JFK's T3, so in that sense anything new will be better!
