Well, that is a problem, because images are not an appropriate technique to detect explosives, that have no "signature image". Whole body imaging cannot tell the difference between a maxipad and an underwear bomb, and cannot detect objects inside cavities, under fake skin, body folds or, infamously, pancakes. It is inadequate for both having many false positives and allowing false negatives. This is so simple and obvious I find it impossible to believe that TSA management does not know that, and is trying desperately to cover up and justify their very bad decision to buy these machines.

If we opt out the only reason is that we must have E and they are darn certain that they will find it even if it means that they have to touch every inch of our body that they can. It is not so much retaliatory as it is "Aha, we have caught one we just need to prove it" thoroughness. The only way they can prove it is to maximize the exposure to the E traces for which they are looking.
Maybe some TSOs think that way, but I canīt believe management, that creates the rules, are that stupid. I still think it is punishment, meant to be as uncomfortable as possible, to convince you to "behave" and go through the scope next time.
