Obviously I'm some sort of freak around here but I just can't get my head around the integrity of it all.

Credit card companies make money off of you using their card. They gave it to you for free the first year for a reason. This ins't an integrity issue as much as it is a "smarts" issue. You either have smarts or you don't.
Accepting a credit card with a fee when they make more than enough to cover your points they distribute is just plain dumb.
