Stayed last week - fairly standard Sheraton.
Large rooms in a very good condition - but that decor! Where did they get that awful shade of red - it looks like furniture/drapes/bedspreads etc were stolen from a former East German Bordello.
No upgrade - couldn't manage the club floor, SPG floor or even a SPG room on my floor - but I think all of the rooms are pretty much interchangeable.
I was surprised by how small the lounge was - but it was never full - so obviously they know the marketplace.
Never really got the "vibe" of Essen so not exactly sure what the best location would be - but it appeared as good as anywhere. Also an underground tram stop right out front which was handy for getting to Zollverein.
Big downside was the Hotel was too noisy for me. Could clearly hear plumbing in the adjacent rooms and the noise of door slamming was extraordinarily loud. This is clearly a business hotel and as a purely leisure traveller I found housekeeping to be out and about a bit too early and loudly for my liking as well.
Pricing of the rooms and services within the hotel is certainly far above what the quality you get suggests - a symptom of a city with a few company headquarters and limited accommodation choices.
