I think you have to check in 13 hours before the flight for Virgin to honour your seat requests. This is a rather academic point because seat allocations can be changed at any time for operational reasons.

The more important point is that if you do OLCI early, I believe you are indeed much less likely to be downgraded because of overbooking. That's a good enough reason for me.
