You're getting confused between status earning last year and this year.

From your situation, I think you qualified for Gold with 2011 flying (making you a Gold this year), and now want to buy-up to Plat for this year (so if you buy-up, you'll get the 75% RDM bonus; if you stay Gold, you get 50%). You're basically retroactively "qualifying" for Plat based on last year's flying by paying this $ to UA.

But the ticker has reset to 0 for 2012 - whatever status you get for next year will be based on how much you fly this year.
