Annoyance on Flight 16 SFO-JFK by P.A. updates of football scores.

As I settled into my seat for yesterday's SFO-JFK flight I was happy to be leaving (relatively) on time as we have had some bad weather in the Bay Area. Unfortunately, my upgrade didn't come through but I was seated in an exit row, so all was well. An extended taxi before take-off had me dozing a few times and I was hopeful for a restful flight.

Was definitely encouraged and even more optimistic that I would be able to sleep through this long flight when the captain said 'I know some of you like to nap so I won't be making many announcements'. I settled in, we took off and all seemed well....

And then someone (co-pilot, captain, purser?) decided that they would assist the passengers who were too cheap to pay for wi-fi by updating us on the football game. Now, I don't care about football, perhaps that's my bias. It was a fine gesture to make once or twice during the SF-NY game (since those were the two cities we were touching) but announcements were made repeatedly during a NE-BAL game (approximately 5-6 announcements) giving updates. Then during the SFO-NY game there were at least another 6-8 announcements. All together, it was impossible for me to sleep for more than a half hour or so at a time as these announcements were constantly waking me up.

Needless to say, this isn't major but what is the purpose of offering wi-fi AND saying 'we will let you sleep' if you are going to become a glorified PA announcer for a football game? If I cared about the game I would have stayed home to watch it or followed it on gogo wireless. Really was annoyed by this and thought if was unnecessary and rude.

Thoughts?
