Reloder...stick with the forum and eventually you'll get the answers you seek. You'll have to pardon the cheerleaders in here and other airlines threads that are so happy that they get to carry a little plastic card with their name on it and the world "Elite" that they take any offense to the AS program personally. (To use a sales term, it's like "calling their baby ugly.")
Unfortunately, I do not have enough experience with other carriers to profer a useful answer myself...but the poster who mentioned carrying an extra duffel gets a gold star for having a fantastic, no-downside idea. Would solve this issue with minimal inconvenience!
