I did not find mention of DoubleTree Tower Hill, London anywhere else, so I report my recent experience here. Had a two night stay booked there 16 to 18 Jan 2012. I was trying to locate hotel beforehand by using Google Maps, which still shows just an empty lot with fences around. A brand new building therefore...
Pre-paid AWA room rate was £135 a night. A smart upgrade to a king suite at 8th floor overlooking the Tower castle and bridge was £65 extra for night. Check in 10AM was without any troubles. A DYKWIA from across Atlantic was giving hard time to the service manager by demanding free amenities, since "there is not an executive lounge in the property", "he has to pay enormous amounts for everything consumed in the hotel" and "we either settle this up here or...". Obviously, no free booze available! That would have been fun to observe even further, but I was in a hurry to get to meetings elsewhere.
Large suite consisted of lounge with huge windows, work space in one corner of the lounge, and dining table in another corner, 46 inch LCD-tv with 5.1 surround speakers, altogether 3 Mac computers (one of them substituting the bedroom tv), free WiFi (3 to 4 Mb/sec up/downloads) + wired internet, huge bathroom with tub and shower cabin, well functioning faucets and adequate water pressure (unusual in many London properties), two authentic phalaenopsis orchids as decor, king size bed in bedroom, and also in room safe, coffee maker + supplies, but no minibar.
Very satisfied with the room and house keeping. Room service food offerings were somewhat limited but not very expensive. The most expensive item, Hilton-style burger with fries and bottle of wine were around £40 with service fees. Complimentary fruit basket and mineral water were brought in daily.
Continental breakfast buffet was adequate. English breakfast was served à la carte. I had it in my room rate (£8 extra) but I think it would be complimentary for HHGs and -Ds.
The connections are good as well. Tower Hill tube station is just around 100 yards from the front door and Tower Gateway DLR station to reach Canary Wharf/Docklands, City Airport, etc., just 200 yards away. When travelling to Canary Wharf, one needs to change to Lewisham train, and when getting back, to the Tower Gateway train, at Shadwell or Limehouse stations. Fenchurch Street local train station is on the backyard of the hotel.
They can expect to see me and my credit card once a month for two nights, as long as they will not spoil the experience with steeper pricing - as the Canary Wharf Hilton keeps on doing. Hilton Docklands ceased to be an alternative after they cut out the complimentary bus service from/to Canada Water tube station. And what a shack it is compared to this new DoubleTree!
