it seems like it would be a smart idea for AA, for people who are on MR's either when they have iropps or are looking for vdb to just give those people their miles and let them go home.

Of course then there might be a bit of a game for people to try and find overbooked flights to do MR's on, but I doubt AA would mind as they'd actually sell the seat twice.
