This 1P selfishly says "no thanks."
If folks are too lazy to get online and select a new seat, so be it. I don't want E+ shoved full of folks when there are empty rows in back. Besides, how would you regulate it at T-24? Would the guy with 49,900 status miles get dibs over someone with 24,001? Or is it by time booked?
This adds a whole other level of infrastructure to an IT system that can't even handle upgrades to J with a consistent basis. And it also gives a bunch of self-righteous silvers (not saying you are one, but we all know someone would cop the DYKWIA attitude even as a silver) an opportunity to call, b*tch and complain to a beleaguered gate agent over a lack of transparency.
Besides, you'd be upgrading someone into E+ when they haven't checked in and have no intention of even catching the flight. At least if it's done voluntarily at OLCI you know they're likely to catch the flight. The way it is now, those who really want to do something about their seat assignment can do it.
