True. As does Qantas and Kingfisher, too, in some cases!

But the phone agent discussed in the OP appears to have thought that AA (rather than BA) operated the particular flight in question.

Way OT but does anyone know if AA ever did serve Amsterdam? (The wiki page of (terminated) AA destinations doesn't list it). Perhaps if Delta buys AMR we will be seeing AA at Schiphol in the future!!!
