Interlaken can be a good base in the area too, depending on what type of town you prefer to be in. We spent a week staying there, making day trips out to Bern, Basel, and Lucerne as well as up into the Alps and even down to the boarder with Italy. The public transit system makes it easy to get just about anywhere (the Swiss Pass is a great investment for getting around), and the scenery is so gorgeous that spending time on the train is a pleasure itself.
