I disagree that it is dumb. Whilst it is a public space, entry is controlled and generally the people who can afford to have a shiny card and/or travel in premium cabins don't have the need to steal from fellow travellers. Whilst I wouldn't leave IT equipment or passport/wallet sitting on a table whilst I wander off, I have left my cabin baggage unattended whilst I go to get some food/drink/newspapers.
