You call your normal premium line and politely ask if they could talk to the yield management to see if they would be able to release an upgrade seat although the point upgrade request has been declined. It would only work while there is someone at the yield management and it takes some time, so be prepared to spend up to $50 in phone calls if you are calling from a mobile.
This option may no longer be available to anyone except the Platinum One, however. I don't know because I haven't tried it for some time.

Didn't ever occur to me to do this.
I'll give it a go the next time aJ-F points upgrade request fails to be accepted for the A380 ( a fairly frequent occurrence
