I've followed most of this thread but admittedly not all of it. Most of my flying is North, Central and South America where I'm upgraded and lounge access comes with the premium cabin. In the lounges most people are referring to, do the lounge dragons swipe your cards or just look at them? The reason I ask is because it sounds like UA is going to be coding the cards to reflect the extended status so what the card physically says would be mitigated by a swipe.
