Are you sure the systems are really this connected so they can just pull United's data ? My assumption was that they type it in so they can bill United later on but its not really used for a lookup of your status.
I did see some lounges pulling up a folder checking my United GS card if it applies for Gold lounge entry. Seems like they don't always even look at the Gold symbol on it.
