To Save the Internet's Soul

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Ben Edelman, the star witness in a high-profile lawsuit challenging a federal law requiring libraries to install antipornography Internet filters, was so tired and distracted when he took the stand that he placed his left hand on the bible.

The problem: He had a midterm exam waiting for him at Harvard and was jet-lagged from a spring-break trip to Japan.


All of 22 years old and looking even younger, Mr. Edelman nevertheless has emerged as one of the nation's most influential voices in the debates raging over the power of governments and corporations to restrict who can download what off the Internet. A successful computer entrepreneur, he launched his first business when he was only 13. Yet, unlike many who grew rich in the dot-com boom, Mr. Edelman, who comes from a prominent family of liberals, chose to focus on less lucrative academic research and legal work to try to influence how the world uses the Internet.
