Seriously, I will hope for the best, and perhaps I will be proven wrong, but I do not see this working flawlessly, if at all.

I still think it is very appropriate to ask for clarification from UAs representative.
My perception:
UA now: We are notifying all Star Alliance Partners. We assure you, there will be no problem accessing any of your benefits without a card. We have it all under control.
I peer into my crystal ball, and this is what I see:
UA later: We notified our Star Alliance Partners that you should be considered *G. We are sorry they did not pay any attention to us, but it is not our fault. We told them...we really did. Sorry 'bout that
