I can report that Amex insurance is different in every country and different by card colour. I have a Centurion Amex in the one country that does not cover, and a Platinum Amex in another country that does cover.
I suggest you contact the one that does cover immediately. I am not sure if they would be prepared to cover you since you did not get pre-approval but you may be able to get reimbursement. It's worth a try.
