I think it's easier to get on the day to have an upgrade seat released after the points upgrade request had failed. At least they know what hasn't been sold and unlikely to sell. I don't think I have had any failures in the days when I used to request them. I haven't tried this for the last 3 years or so though, as my points upgrade request have always come through during that time, and I haven't flown QF long haul for over 18 months now.
Isn't the OP asking about having a Classic Award seat released and not a points upgrade?

I've never asked on the day of departure for an upgrade on an international flight where a points upgrade has been declined.
How do you do this?
