You wouldn't necessarily have to close the account straight away, just not use it for a while.
If the process is still the same, I had an RBS AA card years ago where I had £2.5k worth of fraud put on it while away. Along with the fact that RBS were pretty appaling in dealing with it, Citi started a similar card at the same time so I stopped using the RBS card and cancelled it on my return. I got the points for the fraudulent transaction and nothing was ever clawed back from my account.
