If you're going to get a bagel, you could ask for an 'everything with nothing'. Your 5th grader might enjoy that! It's an everything bagel (like it sounds---onions, poppy seeds, salt, etc) with no butter or cream cheese. Or my favorite is a hot plain bagel with nova (not lox b/c it's too salty for my tastes) and cream cheese. I have a preference for Tal Bagels on 1st Ave.

In the winter, chestnuts roasting on every touristed corner! They smell soooooooo good. On that same corner are those giant pretzels. Yum!

Sushi sushi everywhere. Very New York.

If you want a cup of coffee with milk, you ask for a 'coffee regular'.

Then there's chicken in the pot aka "Jewish Penicillin" which cures just about everything and is heavenly on a cold day (very much UNLIKE TODAY).

Matzo ball soup, gefilte fish.

That's all I can think of right now. What a neat project.
