Thanks to all who posted practical advice. Ended up calling Delta a few weeks before my flight and was able to get all non-stop flights that fit my schedule. Had to depart one day earlier. But it ended up being a less stressful trip that way. Departed early evening the day before my original departure date. Ended up not having to wake up at 3am'ish to catch the first flight of the day.
