sign up for Twitter and you can receive tweets to your VF or XT mobile for free, sometimes on those WLG-AKL or AKL-WLG flights I can receive maybe 100 text messages... all for free. I too wonder whether they make any more from it. Probably AirNZ didn't pay a cent for the hardware, some other company put it in and are going to make their money back from roaming charges.
