It started a few years ago, when they began to consolidate the various types of Veg meals into one "vegan" option just to save money/logistics.

As VGMLs cannot have butter, they force that restriction on VLMLs as well - so they don't have to differentiate between trays (and sometimes even the whole meal).

I wrote a long letter a few years back, and had a face-to-face meeting with BAEC personnel to complain that VLMLs were being given VGML or AVMLs instead of what they ordered, just to save money.
This was vehemently denied - until I produced two proofs:
Exhibit A: The fact that VLMLs no longer receive butter
Exhibit B: One of the stickers I saved from the bottom of my tray which read "VGML/VLML/AVML".
I was met with akward silence, and then told "we don't make the policy for catering, but we see what you're saying" and I was given an upgrade on my next flight...
