Considering that snow is a possibility in that region from October to April making them quite prepared for it, and that DTW has 6 runways, and new uncrowded state of the art terminals, infrastructure, etc., I would choose DTW over ATL no matter the reason. Obviously that's a commentary on the airports only; DTW/Detroit enjoys no MARTA, nor any nearby attractions/shopping should one be stuck there for a while....but the in-terminal Westin can be quite soothing.
