You make a good point, as does the OP. But whenever I wander into the UA forum and even hint at a suggestion of taking US, I get shot down. There was a recent discussion in the *A forum about best biz to Europe; of course US was mentioned, but everyone shot down the idea.
US still has its work cut out for it in getting over the negative image. If things continue to improve, this shouldn't take long.
That's probably because most people have not flown the new Envoy Class and are simply basing their comments on the past product, which for many years was rather poor.
I just flew UA First, IAD-LHR-IAD, a few days ago and the the quality and presentation of the food was significantly below Envoy, though I was not that surprised since the quality of my Lufthansa First meals on an earlier flight had been quite poor... so much so that right after I ate, I began feeling ill and threw up several times. I felt terrible for the outstanding LH F crew who could not have been more helpful.
