It's hard to earn miles on NZ Y fares...... The fare difference between L and W or V (depends on seasonality) can be $300 to $500 NZD on typical AKL - LAX route.... You have to get an agent to do it... i would go for UA Y instead of NZ Y.... and remember the Y seats in the new 77W is terribly narrow...
