it's probably not the best solution, but if you are worried, how about you remove the hard drive and bring it with you, and check the desktop?
at work, we usually do this the (few) times we have to send a computer to other offices.

again it's not the ideal solution, but at least you will have the hard drive with you all the time and you can protect it.
