Desktop PC as hand luggage on BA...

I'm going LHR - HKG in J on BA and staying in Hong Kong for an extended period, thus, I need my usual desktop PC (home office) with me. It has lots of data that I cannot lose and I don't want to be working off a laptop. I could always pack it in its original packaging, ship it and hope for the best but knowing how luggage handlers work I'd rather not. If I stick it in a small backpack (small tower type, not a very big screen) it should also be accepted as hand luggage. However, would this create trouble going through security etc.? They see laptops all the time but a desktop...?
