$1700 each is absurd and makes sense only if you have money to burn.

For others who desire F comfort I'd recommend flying to SFO or LAX (instead of going backwards to ATL) and then going with UA E+ which is only 2" less legroom than coach (and perhaps UDU to F if you have status on UA). Or alternatively connecting to AA at LAX and hoping for an E500 buyup (again assuming you are at least AA Gold).

Even better would be to fly/transfer to OAK or SJC where you can catch the AS nonstops. AS normally has buy-up to F for $100 each, though the cheapest way to get F is to get a status match to MVP Gold (assuming you have status on another carrier). You will then get 4 upgrade coupons that you can use on almost any flight, provided you book well in advance. The downside for those who do not reside on the West Coast is that almost all AS flights to Hawaii leave early morning and return on the same plane early afternoon, so you are looking at a layover. But not a bad excuse to visit San Francisco or LA area. And saves hundreds for a family of 4 using AS visa $99 companion fares.
