Seems logical, but airline logic is, you get a better routing half the time, a worse one half the time, so it works out even--in theory. But in these days of cutbacks, your situation is more common: going from non-stop to connecting. That's bad, but:
. . . you can schedule change to pretty much any itinerary for sale with the same cities and day. So first check if there's a better one for you, even if it's more expensive. . . .
So, if you could live with your current booking, and another flight has more empty seats, and you're feeling lucky, just wait until a few days before, then call and get your preferred routing. If EC hasn't been selling, you may be in. Otherwise, try the back of the plane for two or even three empty seats: the lie-flat-in-coach option.
