There is a simple explanation for this: Because there were two different partners (not BA), this is treated as an oneworld award. HKG-SYD-HKG is 9161 miles, which falls into the 9001-10000 miles bracket, which is 70k for Y.

It is possible to get this award for 50k by doing two separate one-way bookings.
