Sometimes saving a few £'s isn't worth it

A little tale of woe. I have a friend that works in IT at BA, he mentioned that he could probably get me a good price on our next trip to Vegas through "Hot Line" when I was in the planning stage. I did all my research, we wanted to MFU from WT+ to CW, checked that there was availability both ways, then had a look on BA site for prices. Went back to my friend and he said that he could get £300 knocked of the total through hot line. Did the booking through him, got the conformation email, went onto MMB to upgrade using miles, low and behold the upgrade link is greyed out
So I phoned BAEC and was told that because I had booked through hot line upgrading using miles was not allowed. I was offered a one way upgrade to CW for £399 each which we took. So now this £300 saving has cost almost £500 more,(all be it we are going Club one way).
Fast forward to this morning, I am working out how many TP's we need to reach Silver after this trip, and with a short Y hop to LAX from LAS and back we will hit it spot on the 600 TP's (assuming my paid upgrade to CW from WT+ gets us CW TP's). I decided just to check our booking class and it seems as though on the outbound in CW we are booked in "U" which doesn't appear on the list of eligible classes for TP's, but the return in WT+ is booked in "T" which does get full TP's. Is this right?
