I feel like they have geared GS to those individuals who don't care much about the prices of their fare or businesses professionals that book last minute (which seem to fall under the YBM fares). They want to keep them (as any business/company would) and that's how they approach it -- GS status.

Just to add my data-point - I've booked 90% of my (international) UA flights within 5 business days of flying, many times within the upgrade window (sigh). That never forced me into Y/B which was always surprising, even when I was wait-listed.
So I'm not GS, but I fall into the category of a last-minute, 250K BIS flyer who presumably is good for UA business.
