Yes, you can certainly do this. Show your Tesco Clubcard to earn vouchers (which you then redeem into Avios, once a quarter), and pay for the shopping using a card which earns you Avios directly. The Lloyds TSB Duo Amex fits the bill during the 3-month promo rate (12.5 Avios/£); after that many of us would revert to the BA Amex Premium Plus (1.5 Avios per pound).
