The only "slam dunk" cards I carry are:
PenFed Platinum Cash Visa - 5% on gas
Citi Forward - 5 TYP/$ (thus 5%+ back) on restaurants, movies, books, music stores
Discover and/or Chase Freedom for 5% rotating categories
Personally, everything else I vacillate about each year. Usually I just use a 2% cashback card for most spending. This year I'm balancing with a Starwood card.
But I don't travel on expensive tickets/rooms, so points from CC earning don't mean much to me.
EDIT: In addition, unless you have a ton of spending, you will almost always earn more from a signup bonus than a year (or two)'s spending. So, for now, the question isn't especially important, if you're willing to sign up for many cards anyway.
