As I have not been to Algonquin Park, and as my wife and 6 yr old daughter will be accompanying me, this will be an enjoyable trip (my wife can share the driving, my daughter will like the wildlife, including the moose in the park - how often do they cross the road?).
Note that if you use highway 60 to cross the park and do not go into the parking areas you do not need to purchase an entry permit. If you plan on a walk or museum visit while in the park, then you must stop at the visitor building at the entry and purchase a day pass that must be displayed when you are out of the car. Consider driving through and instead stopping at Arrowhead Provincial Park, just north of Huntsville. It has excellent recreational opportunities and scenery that would be good for young families and is very accessible - and often less crowded. There are lots of bears around in the general area this year - so get local information before venturing out.
