No, about 2 hours into the flight eastbound, definitely not night; ie around late afternoon, before dinner service was completed.

I fly LH long-haul all the time (albeit not polar routes) and have never experienced this. Granted, I don't think I have ever had an extreme wind situation at altitude either.
It was two times with the same pilot, during a very odd 'wind' situation, but then I have had it with other pilots as well. It wasn't typical turbulence, more of a side to side movement. It has always been polar routes (I fly over mountains all the time on LH, whether it be the alps or over Afghanistan, and only had this happen on polar routes, eastbound)
That's why I asked about it here a few years ago, because it was so bizarre to me to think that closing window shades would impact the situation. (And no, these flights were not on a Comet!
