That doesn't sound right.
If you are Gold on 1 March 2012 (which you will be), then you should be able to renew Gold so long as you get to 800 TPs before 8 April 2012; that would keep you Gold until card expiry date 31 May 2013.
And then (if you managed that renewal) to renew Gold again so long as you get to 800 TPs between 9 April 2012 and 8 April 2013; that would keep you Gold until card expiry date 31 May 2014.
Only after that will the 1500 TPs threshold bite (or if you fail to renew your Gold on either occasion).
