I am one of those who earns virtually all my miles through my chase credit card, on the order of 250k to 350k per year. For me the system makes sense as I have no shortage of miles i just compare what the fees are to what a discount CW fare would be...those fees are still much less. However, BA keeps ratcheting up fees and I am starting to think about moving to a different credit card/airline.
