How do you know? You don't. Some FT users will give you guesses. I've used ITA in the past to match fares, and I've been caught by surprise, too.
Solve the problem by calling AC, and asking them. Or do it via email. It is unfair that they offer the dangle the promise of a benefit, and then try to take it away. If an agent won't tell you, hang up and try again. My experience is that they hate looking it up, but you'll get an answer.
Perhaps if it costs AC enough (time) -- after they've dug themselves into a hole with enhancements -- they'll decide to make this transparent. Bit of a joke, that. I expect they will never be transparent.
