What's the deal with skyteam codeshares?

So...what is the deal with skyteam codeshares, anyway? (i.e. DL xxxx operated by KLM)? DL, KL, and AF ALL partner with AS, and all for EQM's. Since the 3 of them are so closely linked it is WAY too common to end up with a ticket involving at least one codeshare, and I'd go so far as to say actually DIFFICULT to find a transatlantic itinerary without a codeshare quite often.

In the past, I had seen on this board, and assumed to be true that these codeshare flights were not eligible for mileage credit as they fell outside the credit earning range. However, as I answered someone's question in the newbie thread, this summer when I was looking for an itin and this situation came up, I was actually told by MP customer care that they were eligible, as long as the operating carrier's flight number and class of service were eligible. It would certainly be nice to hang our hats on that...and equally nice to have it in writing.

In my experience, I flew DL xxxx operated by Air France (AF yyyy) from ATH - CDG. It didn't post automatically, and when I contacted mileage plan, they asked me to submit receipts and boarding passes, which I did - without long explanation; I figured I should let them decline it before arguing. In my case, the miles posted without argument, however as DL yyyy (as in Delta Airlines listed as the carrier, but AF's flight number). Interesting.

So, what have other people's experience been recently? What can we hang our hat on?

In my case, I found that it was quite hard, actually, to reliably determine the operating carrier's class of service - does anyone know a reliable way to determine this? I suspect this may lead to the majority of the problems and hassles encountered here.
