If there is a serious restriction on AmEx Traveler vs. aa.com, I'd certainly purchase the seat, go to aa.com and select my seat there.
That's why FT exists - airlines screw travelers, it's in their genes as oportunistic predators.

And look at WN with their ways of getting money out of travelers. It's
big money to the airlines.
