The 90,000 points was either an unpublished "sale" or IT glitch that is now gone. Normally when this happens and you make changes you are subject to the "new" rules for fuel surcharge and number of points needed.
Booked it with the online tool. Had predicted Aeroplan would try to 'fuel surcharge' the ticket, but didn't get to that point.

I'm simply pleased that I was able to retain the CoS that was originally booked/ticketed and that I managed to avoid another unpleasant Aeroplan experience.
