I am a customer of more than a dozen financial institutions and none of them know about my immigration status and neither is it any of their business. I don't even have to tell an employer my immigration status.

FYI - Mrs User Name and I are both LPRs. In October I applied for the personal and business versions of the US Airways card and she applied just for the personal. I got approved for both without further ado, but she got asked for proof of immigration status.

Go figure.
That's incorrect. You are required by federal law to prove your eligibility to legally work in the U.S. This requires an immigration check known as the I-9 verification.
